The salat place of prayer should be clean because the Islam community does not want someone praying for purity in a dirty area. To perform a salat, Muslims must already be a state of ritual purity so that they pray in a more pure place. If anyone was to pray to God about purity in a trash can, God might not answer that prayer because it doesn't seem pure. But if the area is very clean, maybe the muslims believe that God will answer the prayer because the prayer seems more sincere.

3. How does the hajj symbolize the hardships of ascending into heaven?

The hajj was a journey that the followers of muhammad took to begin their journey of the monotheistic religion Islam. Comparing the Hajj to the harships into heaven is a good comparison because the Hajj took alot of time to get to the city of the prophet to the temple. The hajj was apart of the five pillars of Islam which is apart of Islam that help to achieve the afterlife into heaven, which took alot of harships, time and effort. The Hajj symbolizes it by taking the time and effort into taking the journey, just like the hardships for being accepted into heaven, like obeying laws listed in the Q'uran and not sinning against god.

1. The Salat is the formal prayer in Islam performed five times a daily. The importance of the Salat is to insure that the people of Islam continuously think about their God and insure good decision making. This is different from any other form of western prayer, because instead of prayer being optional or only on certain days it is a daily routine in being a good muslim.

1. The salat differs from other forms of western prayer in several ways. First of all, unlike western religions, it is done 5 times daily, while in western religions, they pray once a week (sabbath). Secondly, the salat can be done anywhere, as long as the place is clean. In other western religions, one usually prays in a holy edifice. They salat also has to be done in the direction of Mecca, and one has to get on their knees and bow when they do it. This is significantly different from other western religions because they do not need to get on the floor or pray in a specific direction.

Courtney: Good answer! To sum it all up, the place of prayer for the salat needs to be clean because cleanliness signifies purity.

Mary Wade: This answer is also pretty accurate. The hajj symbolizes the journey to heaven because both take a lot of time and effort.

Cannon: This is good, but you could have given a little more info on western prayer routines.

Tabatha: I like your example for western prayer. You made a very good comparison between Islam and western religions.

What is the salat, and why is it different from other forms of western prayer?

The salat, also known as the salah, is pretty much the prayer. Believe it or not, the salah's true meaning and purpose is not really known well known through out the Muslim community. Since the salah is a prayer, there are 4 positions in which to recite the salah: sitting, standing, prostrating, and bowing. Performing the salah is a very detailed process and there are requirements as to how one should pray. This prayer is different from western prayers because, not only should prayers be recited everyday in the western religions, but the process is easier. The salah repeats many sayings and there are many readings. In christianity (a western religion), for example, a prayer is either a brief praise to God or just a few minutes and they are usually recited everyday.

2. What is the purpose of fasting during the sawm? What does it teach Muslims?
The purpose of fasting during to swam is to help show your dedication to Allah, the Islamic God and it also teaches them to sympathize for poor people because poor people can not eat as much.
